A celebration of loyalty

After many successful concerts this year the Ladies Choir is having a short summer break and we decided to have a social evening, a get together to celebrate the dedication of some of our longest serving members.

Lee, Margaret, Val, Sylvia, Mary and Pat were given Life Membership and we also recognised the amazing achievement of Founder Members Lorna, Barbara, ( not pictured ) Angeline, Marlene, Pam and Jean who joined the choir in 1966 and are still singing with us!

TOGETHER

Here is a little video in celebration of Stithians Ladies Choir’s 50 years of making music, making friends, making money for charity and having a ball at the same time! The photos are from concerts and events over the past few years and will bring back many happy memories for members and audiences alike.

ENJOY!

This song was recorded at our most recent concert in Falmouth

where we raised £1000 for Marie Curie Cornwall

Another £1000!

WE ARE PROUD

Yes. For the third time in a row a Stithians Ladies concert has raised £1000 for charity. Well, to be honest, we made nearly that amount after expenses and the members voted unanimously to make it up to the round figure.

We shall be inviting representatives from Marie Curie Cornwall to visit us soon so that we can present a cheque which will help in their invaluable work.

Where in the world?

When you have a web site like this, which is hosted by WordPress, there is a most interesting feature called Stats. You can keep track of how many people visit your site, what interests them most and, fascinatingly, where in the world they come from.

During the time this site has been live we have had visitors from all these countries …

Who would have thought it?

The Choir 50th Anniversary Dinner

Here is a photo montage set to the song which we regard as the choir anthem for its 50th year … TOGETHER!

EARLY DAYS

On a chilly October day in 1966 the late Sydney Bowden held the very first rehearsal of the newly formed Stithians Ladies Choir. In the village there was already a male voice choir and a silver band so this was a welcome addition to the flourishing music scene in Stithians. Sydney was the organist and choir master of the Methodist Church at Penmennor so the practice was held in the Jubilee room on a Friday and so it stayed until the floor became unsafe and the ladies moved to the Sunday School downstairs.

As well as the first chairman of the choir Joan Biscoe and Sydney Bowden’s daughter Joan Haile, the dinner was attended by the eight founder members who are still singing with the choir today.

Try this for size …

At the end of July the choir held a fund-raising event to boost the choir funds so that we can invest in some new winter uniform, the current red jackets (pictured below) having served us well for quite a number of years.

Events such as this normally involve coffee mornings, jumble sales and the like but Stithians Ladies tend to Think Big so a dinner was held at our very own Stithians Centre.

~ Pure delight … “seconds”  of Monica’s Special Trifle! ~

The dinner was planned and prepared by intrepid choir members Molly and Monica together with their trusty band of helpers. The tables looked lovely with flowers by Suzanne, there was a bar and a raffle and entertainment from Anne Parkes which included spontaneous dancing from Lee!

It was a really happy occasion, sharing good food and fellowship with each other, friends and family. It marked the end of a half year which had been filled with friendship, music and laughter and the sharing of those precious gifts with the wider community at our concerts. The Ladies now have their summer break in order to recoup and rejuvenate ahead of a busy Autumn and Christmas season.

The good news is that a total of £485 was made at this lovely fund-raiser and that will go towards boosting the coffers to acquire our new winter uniform – watch this space for a fashion show!

The long and short of it

As Stithians Ladies Choir approaches its 50th year we would like to share some interesting facts about the membership. This is the first instalment.

IMG_1172Here we see two ladies from the alto section –               LEE BOWDEN ( left ) with LAUREN GARDNER.  There are many similarities between these two members but it is the differences which are most striking. Whereas Lee is one of our founder members, having been a chorister since the very beginning, Lauren has only recently joined our ranks. Without revealing the actual ages of either member, I can disclose that there is a gap of over 60 years between them. And, as you can see, the height difference is noticeable too!

Lee has been a member of the Stithians community all her life whereas Lauren, from Ponsanooth, is just embarking on her career in the field of education. Lee has loved the music and friendship of the choir for many years whereas Lauren brings her infectious youth and vitality to a brand new venture and is looking forward to learning from the more experienced members.

So … two ladies, seemingly poles apart, brought together by their love of singing and their common goal – to enhance life through music.

If you would like to join Lee and Lauren then why not come along to practice? –                 it’s on Thursday.
