We’re back!

Our first concert of 2017

We had a lovely time at our first concert of the new season. Our friends from the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir ventured across The Bridge to join us at Carnon Downs Methodist chapel and sing for Cornwall Down’s Syndrome Support Group. The gentlemen from Devon gave us some excellent performances despite being only half their usual number, the dreadful winter illness that many of us have succumbed to having taken its toll. We commend them on their fortitude under very difficult circumstances – thank you chaps, Proper Job!

The Ladies too were in fine form performing two of the new pieces we have been learning, along with some of our recent repertoire. And to top off a lovely evening there were scrummy refreshments for all ( yes .. enough for two choirs and a large, enthusiastic audience! )

During the evening Sandy from The Cornwall Down’s Syndrome Support Group explained what life can be like with a Down’s child in the family, using a heart-felt, emotive analogy which touched us all. Hands delved deep into pockets and money was raised by ticket sales, donations and a gigantic raffle. Very soon, when all the money has been counted, we will be able to say how much we are able to donate to this hugely worthy local charity and we look forward to handing over a sizeable cheque. So many good people gave generously of their time, talents, energies and expertise and we thank them all for making a thoroughly enjoyable evening. This was only the first of a whole series of concerts that the choir is featuring this year – click HERE to read about future events.

And while we wait for the amount raised to be finalised here are a few photos of the evening.

Our next concert is …

  IN AID OF

CORNWALL DOWN’S SYNDROME SUPPORT GROUP

a charity run by families affected by Down’s syndrome living in Cornwall.

Come and share an evening of music and fellowship as our friends in the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir cross the border to join us at Carnon Downs Methodist chapel. You can pay at the door and your £5 will help to support this vibrant and essential local charity. Click HERE to learn more about the work of CDSSG.

Notice that the poster says “Including supper” … the ladies of the choir are not only excellent singers but superlative cooks and their after concert refreshments have an enviable reputation!

NOT TO BE MISSED.

And don’t forget it is World Down’s Syndrome Day on March 21st

So.   What do a couple of dozen Ladies of a Certain Age do on a dismal, damp Saturday in March?

A little knitting perhaps?

Or a gentle stroll in the park with the grandchildren?

Maybe some baking for the WI?

No. This is Stithians Ladies Choir and on Saturday 11th March they set off early and full of resolve to catch a coach to go to Newlyn.

The objective of their trip was to present the Penlee Lifeboat Station Appeal with a cheque for £1000, the magnificent sum which was raised at the Carol Service ( report here ) commemorating the loss of the Solomon Browne in the Penlee lifeboat disaster of 1981. The ladies were shown around the existing station which is now cramped and inadequate and then they were guided round the RNLB Ivan Ellen by coxswain Patch Harvey. Penlee press officer Elaine Trethowan was both informative and entertaining and the ladies left with a much clearer understanding of the workings of this remarkable institution and a renewed desire to contribute whenever and wherever possible.

Look what we did ….

£1000

Yes – ONE THOUSAND POUNDS –

is the amount that we raised for the Penlee Lifeboat Station Appeal!

This was made up of the generous amount given by the congregation at our Carol Service, an equally generous amount from the Choir and a donation. So a cheque will be taken down to Newlyn very soon and we are really looking forward to seeing how our efforts have contributed to this fabulous local charity. Fund raising has changed completely in recent years with online giving, bank transfers and other quick and easy methods but there is nothing like seeing cash mounting up and being able to hand it over in person!

Remember the collecting boxes that the RNLI have had in the past?

Welcome back

Last night was the first practice of 2017 and the ladies made a fine sound – not a bit rusty after the Christmas break and raring to go with new music. It was lovely to get back into the swing of wonderful singing and catching up with friends. We are really looking forward to the challenges that the new year will bring and to sharing our music making far and wide. For a list of our 2017 concerts please click the Concerts and Events tab above.

Meanwhile, here is a selection of photos taken by John Colgate at the Stithians Centre. The concert featured the St Stythians Male Voice Choir, the St Stythians Band and ourselves. A packed hall and the joy of sharing music and laughter with friends ensured a most enjoyable Stithians tradition.

The Choir has now completed its quartet of Christmas events, having sung in a memorable and moving Carol Service at St Stythians church. A collection was taken in aid of the new Penlee lifeboat station – we will post the final amount when all the last few donations have been included.

We would like to thank all readers of these pages, our families and  friends for their continuing and highly valued support during this past year. We look forward to sharing more music and laughter with you all very soon.

A poignant Carol service

Today, 19th December, is when many people in Cornwall and the wider community think back to the Penlee lifeboat disaster of 1981.

At our carol service on Thursday 22nd there will be a poignant reminder of the dreadful events of that night and a time for quiet reflection at this busy time of year.  We would love to see you there.

Another Christmassy night

The ladies blend with the gentlemen – conductor Andrew Thomas

On Friday we were the guests of Holman Climax Male Voice Choir at their community Christmas concert. The hall was packed and the appreciative audience enjoyed a varied programme from the gentlemen, ourselves, Jim & Ria and compère Adrian Wilton. Favourite carols, including those of Merritt and Nicholas were sung, mince pies were consumed, humourous stories were enjoyed and everyone had a thoroughly Christmassy time.

Our next engagement is on Tuesday when we join with St Stythians MVC, St Stythians Band and the good folk of Stithians village to share music and festivities in the Stithians Centre.

” It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas!”
