Autumn 2025

After a lovely concert in Falmouth with special guests St Stythians Band and Shirley Tyack, we are now looking forward to a return visit to St Elwyn’s Church in Hayle on Thursday 20 November.

In December we have evening carols in the Carnon Community Methodist Church on the Friday 5th, as part of the Christmas Tree Festival, and afternoon carols at Baldhu Church on Sunday 7th, an invitation to Perranwell Village Hall to join the Perranwell Community Choir’s concert on Saturday 13th, and will be joining the Community Carols at 3pm on Sunday 14th at Stithians Methodist Church.

Looking Back and Forwards

We thoroughly enjoyed the summer concert, just over two weeks ago now, at the Princess Pavilion. A warm sunny evening (a little too hot for some) provided the backdrop for a varied programme of music laced together with a theme of peace and joy. In addition to the choir pieces there were solos from choir members – vocal, instrumental and poetical – as well as a singing trio and the delightful Carrick Consort recorder group.

After a well-deserved short summer break, rehearsals begin again tonight at 7.30pm at The Hub, Carnon Downs (in the hall next to the Methodist Chapel). Anyone interested in joining the choir is very welcome to come along on a Thursday evening to see what we get up to.

Thanks to our choir supporters Peter and John for the photos of the evening.

Summer is coming!

Despite the wind and greyness today, Stithians Ladies are full of the joys of summer and busy getting ready for our next concert. We are happy to say that our new Musical Director is settling in well, and we are delighted that Rico agreed to take us on. We have been busy rehearsing a range of new songs, including the lively medieval Sumer is icumen in, as well as more modern tunes and some old favourites. We will be at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth on Monday 22 July, as part of their Summer Sounds programme, please come and join us for an entertaining evening.

OUR NEXT CONCERT

We will be guests of Loveny Male Voice Choir

The splendour of St Petroc’s Church Bodmin will be our venue.

Some of our recently joined members will be experiencing their first concert with us and we will be sharing a lovely, varied programme with some solo verses and featuring our dear friend Becky McGlade on ‘cello.

It will be a super evening of music from two award winning choirs and only £8 entrance payable on the door.

MABE LADIES CHOIR

Mabe Ladies Choir has been a feature in the Cornish musical Landscape since 1931 and has long been hailed as one of Cornwall’s premier choral groups, having on many an occasion won trophies and accolades in competitions both in Cornwall and farther afield. They nurture strong bonds with choirs locally and from as far away as Wales and Sweden.

Their catchment for members spreads from Truro to Coverack, with ages ranging from thirty-something to eighty-something. Once a week they meet in Penryn to enjoy and nurture their common love of singing. The choir take their singing very seriously, always striving to achieve the highest possible standards, with repertoire which spans a wide variety of genres.

However it is the Community of Mabe Ladies Choir which is the bond that truly sings through them and which fills audiences with a warm glow. That said, they do love a good chat, and much fun is had whilst engaging in the serious matter of singing!

St Hilary Adventure

Our recent concert with Marazion Apollo Male Choir was a resounding success and took us to a lovely new venue. We had not performed in St Hilary church before and we were really impressed with the unusual interior and the famous acoustic.

The choirs  join together to sing Morte Christe lead by MD Kate Wood-Cattran.

We were really pleased that we had set off early because the coach got stuck in the narrow lane approaching the church and we had to walk the last bit – thank goodness the rain, so overwhelmingly present during the week, had abated and it was not freezing cold!

The standard of singing in this concert was incredibly high with the sweet tones of the Ladies contrasting with the powerful delivery of the Gentlemen and yet blending beautifully for the finale. The Ladies were particularly pleased to be able to present a performance of the gorgeous carol that they recently commissioned from Cornish composer Becky McGlade. They are preparing this stunning piece for Truro Big Sing in the Cathedral on 12th December and, judging by the audience reaction, it is going to sound wonderful.

The evening was rounded off with refreshments prepared by the ladies of St Hilary Church and then we departed for home, but not without a few “big coach in a little lane” issues!    All’s well that ends well!
